Study: Nanodiamonds and the Future of Root Canals

Root Canals | Alpharetta Creek Restorative Dentistry

While most of us dread the thought of getting a root canal, the fact is that the procedure helps about 15 million people each year by saving an infected tooth from extraction.

If you think that nothing has changed about root canals in Alpharetta, you may be pleasantly surprised. The comfort and efficiency of root canals have improved dramatically in recent years because dentists continue to look for ways to improve not just the procedure but to deliver more favorable long-term outcomes.

Root Canals, Gutta Percha, and Nanodiamonds

The goal of a root canal is to remove infected material from inside the tooth to relieve pain and save the tooth. During the next step, your dentist fills the cleaned-out canals with a material called gutta-percha to help seal out bacteria. However, it’s a delicate process, and sometimes the gutta-percha breaks or creates tiny spaces that are prone to infection.

In 2017, researchers from the UCLA School of Dentistry and UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science published a study regarding their work with nanodiamonds and how they could be used to enhance the protective properties of gutta-percha.

Nanodiamonds are minute particles of carbon that have facets like actual diamonds. When embedded in gutta-percha, the researchers found that the combination was more resistant to breaking than gutta-percha alone.

What This Means for You

Every advancement in dental medicine benefits you, and while you may not see nanodiamonds used in your dentist’s office right away, the results of the study hold promise for the future of root canals and the outcomes delivered.
